Motorbikes in Vietnam

Motorbikes in Vietnam

Vietnam is quite possibly the most fascinating travel destination we have been to in terms of transportation. Why? Well, to get straight to the point its all about the motorbikes. The motorbike culture is so ingrained in Vietnamese lifestyle, that in ways motorbikes are synonymous with Vietnam in my books.

Which got me thinking why Vietnam (and for that matter Southeast Asian countries) had such an ingrained motorbike culture and the rest of the world really didn’t. I began asking around and below are the answers I received.

Motorbike Pros:
1. Easy to maneuver in densely populated areas.
2. Much cheaper to own.
3. Can fit up to a family of five on a motorbike.
4. Awesome female helmets that allow for ponytail space.
5.The infrastructure for public transit in many cities is nonexistent or unhelpful (although Saigon is in the process of building one out).

But the real answer for the motorbikes in Vietnam comes down to money. To own a car, the taxes can sometimes be up to 100% of the price of the car. Not many people can afford to pay double for an expensive car. So owning a bike, with prices starting as low as $300, is a much more affordable option.

    • Right?!? Crazy how many people they fit on a motorbike! I also saw them moving a fridge and a car door…and a dog along for the ride

    • Thank you. I am glad you enjoyed it. I think Motorbikes are so interesting but kinda terrifying but also so much fun…obviously, I am still trying to figure out exactly how I feel about them!
