Remember that movie, “Uptown Girls?” You know, the one with Brittany Murphy and Dakota Fanning? Well, if you remember, Brittany Murphy is Dakota Fanning’s nanny, they have a rocky start to their relationship, become the best of friends, have a falling out, and then are besties again. Well, during that falling out period, remember how Dakota Fanning runs off to Coney Island (sorry if I spoiled it for you)? Well, Coney Island, it is actually kind of far from Manhattan. Guess I am becoming more of an adult that I care to admit, but the thought of an 8 year old going that far by themselves seems a little crazy…but then again, that is the magic of movies!
Now back to Coney Island, Ryan and I decided to take the subway down to Coney Island to see the boardwalk and experience what a deserted ghost town looks like. Even in the winter, Coney Island still had an air of mystery and fun. We walked the boardwalk for a few minutes and then sought somewhere warm for refuge. We landed at none other than Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs (holds the national hot dog eating contest!). Ryan and I devoured our hot dogs, gained a few pounds, (common theme for this trip) and then braved the cold again.
Our next activity for the day was visiting the 9/11 Memorial Museum. This was one of the most exhausting, yet patriotic things I have done in a long time. We spent a solid 4 hours exploring the memorial museum, which started with a talk hosted by two people directly affected by that fateful day. It was heart wrenching to hear their stories and brought fresh to my mind that everyone carries a hidden hardship and to always remember that and to be kind, always.
