To achieve success in anything, whether it’s cooking, photography, relationships, writing or whatever your beautiful, creative heart desires, it’s crucial to start with the basics and build a good foundation. Rome wasn’t built in a day ya know… and, um… (insert cliche about success here). Anyway, the same goes for a great wardrobe. I used to shop very ‘willy nilly’, always buying pieces impulsively and religiously surfing the sale racks. Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a good sale and sometimes an impulse buy can be a fun addition to your closet, but it’s important to make sure you have a strong base wardrobe to build off of. Invest in high-quality, classic, tailored pieces that you’ll wear often. Not only will you have a consistent and flattering personal wardrobe, you’ll also have a considerably more defined style and a much better idea of what pieces you’d like to add down the road. When establishing your reliable go-to wardrobe, here are a few suggestions:
1. Choose styles that fit your personality AND your body type – style is a way for you to express yourself and trust me when I say, you’ll express the best version of yourself when you’re in clothes that make you feel comfortable and confident.
2. Incorporate colors, shapes and textures that can be mix-matched – this will allow you to change up outfits more often and help you avoid the dreaded ‘I have nothing to weeeear’ feeling.
3. Consult your Pinterest account – this was far and away the best way to define a basic wardrobe for me personally. I looked at my Style page on Pinterest and surveyed what shapes, textures and colors I pinned the most; once I had those defined, I used them as guidelines for determining my basics.
Here are my personal top 10 must-have pieces that are always in my closet:
